Injectables Q&A

What are injectables?

Injectables are a treatment administered using a sterile syringe and needle. There are numerous different injectables to choose from, and new options hit the market frequently.

In fact, there are so many injectable treatments available that it’s difficult to know which options are right for you. That’s why working with a skilled medical professional is so important to discuss your treatment goals and chart a customized treatment plan.

All injectables deliver temporary results, lasting from several months to two years or longer. Combining injectables to achieve improvements in various areas of the face is commonly referred to as a “liquid facelift.”

How do neurotoxin-based injectables work to smooth wrinkles and lines?

Injectables like Botox® and Dysport® are known as neurotoxin-based injectables, formulated from a substance that alters normal muscle function. When injected into targeted facial muscles, these medications prevent the treated muscles from going through their full range of motion.

You’ll still be able to create normal facial expressions, but the treated muscles won’t be strong enough to pull your skin into lines or folds. Botox is FDA-approved for use in frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet, while Dysport is approved for use in frown lines, the vertical lines between your brows.

Results take a couple of days to develop and last around four months. Both options are often used “off-label,” meaning they are administered in areas other than those specifically approved by the FDA.

What are dermal fillers, and how do they work?

Dermal fillers are a type of injectable treatment that restores or enhances facial volume. As you age, you naturally lose much of the collagen that plumps your face during youth, leaving your  skin to sag and fall into lines, folds, and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers work by adding volume in specific areas of your face. Many are formulated from a synthetic version of hyaluronic acid, a substance your body produces naturally. There is a wide range of fillers to choose from, each designed for use in specific areas.

Once injected, the gel-like texture of dermal fillers spreads slightly to plump and smooth your skin. Over time your body naturally absorbs and eliminates the filler material. However, fillers often prompt your system to create new collagen cells, which extend your results.
