Up until recently, there were few options when it came to combating fine lines and wrinkles. These days, however, medical providers can not only eliminate wrinkles but also add volume to the face and fix wrinkles caused by volume loss, all without the need for surgery.
Below, we asked Dr. Andrea Volk, our expert at SafiraMD Medical Aesthetics and Wellness Center, to explain all the options that are available for patients who want to rejuvenate their skin nonsurgically.
The first line of defense against wrinkles are treatments that increase collagen production in the skin by either creating microwounds or heating up the tissue.
For this purpose, Dr. Volk provides microneedling and laser treatments. Microneedling stimulates collagen with minimal downtime. In addition, it’s often used to fade spots and treat large pores.
Another option is laser treatments. Laser treatments, depending on the technology used, may require more downtime but are also more effective at reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and improving skin texture.
Lastly, platelet-rich plasma can also be used to improve the appearance of the skin. Platelet-rich plasma therapy involves taking a few vials of blood, separating its components in a centrifuge, and injecting the growth factors known to stimulate collagen and elasticity. Platelet-rich plasma has long been used in medicine to restore function by increasing the body’s ability to heal itself.
Purified neurotoxins such as Botox® and Dysport® are used for the treatment of lines that don’t respond to collagen-inducing therapies. These lines may be deeper or simply continue to reappear due to poor elasticity in the skin.
Neurotoxins block the movement of the muscle underneath the skin, relaxing the lines and smoothing the skin out. These injectables are used for any lines caused by facial expressions, such as frowning and smiling.
Some wrinkles are caused neither by poor skin elasticity nor by frequent creasing but by bone loss, muscle loss, and fat loss in the face.
Fillers are substances that add volume to the face and, as a consequence, fill in the wrinkles caused by volume loss.
Often, rejuvenation of the face is a complex process that involves combining several treatments.
However, in the hands of a skilled provider, you can take years off your face without undergoing invasive procedures. Contact us to schedule an appointment to find out what treatments may work best for your goals.
